SHEro Series - Dr. Joe Smail
Joe Smail is a nationally certified school psychologist at the Maryland School for the Deaf – Columbia Campus where he works alongside a talented group of individuals providing direct diagnostic/assessment and counseling services, as well as consultation and training to school staff and families. He holds a Masters/Specialist Degree in School Psychology from Rochester Institute of Technology (2000) and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Gallaudet University (2010). He completed a two-year postdoctoral residency in clinical neuropsychology at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Previously, Dr. Smail worked as a school psychologist in the Montgomery County Public Schools Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Program (Rockville, MD), as well as the California and Kentucky schools for the Deaf. Prior to his current position at MSD, Dr. Smail was a neuropsychology associate at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. He specializes in school-based neuropsychological assessment and intervention of attention, executive functions and learning disabilities in Deaf and hard-of-hearing children. Outside of work, Dr. Smail enjoys spending time with his amazing and talented wife, Jeanene, and two curious children, Finn and Isla. As a self-described extroverted introvert, he is also an avid runner who enjoys training for and participating in trail ultramarathons.
