How long will the 5k run take?
Finishing times vary of course, but some runners will complete the run in about 25 minutes. Most runners will fall between 30-45 minutes. We will be sweeping the course to ensure all runners have returned to the starting area.
CAN I WEAR HEADPHONES DURING THE RACE?
For safety reasons, no headphones may be worn during the race. This is the Howard County Police Department’s rule for road races.
IS THIS RACE CHIP TIMED?
There is a clock at the start/finish line, but this race is not about your time, but rather about celebrating your accomplishment. Please remember that the goal of this 5k is to allow girls to enjoy their race experience and not to worry about a finishing in a certain time or place. No awards will be given for time/place finishers.
At GOTR of Central Maryland, we celebrate the limitless potential of our girls and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident. The 5k event is the crowning moment of their participation in this life-changing program.
We ask all 5k participants to honor the spirit of the event as a non-competitive celebration of the girls achieving an incredible goal. Please put their experience first. Thank you in advance for helping to make this event an incredible experience for all our amazing girls.
IT WILL BE CROWDED - HOW CAN I KEEP MY CHILD SAFE?
Each girl must have a partner to run with at the 5k. With more than 2,500 runners on the course, buddy runners look out for the girls and help ensure that their 5k experience is fun, exciting, and safe! Your girl’s buddy runner can be a friend, family member, coach, teacher...anyone 16 or older who will be an encouraging race partner for her. If you are having trouble finding a buddy runner for your girl, please contact the team coach.
For everyone’s safety, please stay within the cones where the course is marked during the race. The street is not closed to traffic. Course marshals and police will be on the course to assist with car traffic, but all participants are expected to pay attention to their surroundings and mind the cars.
WHAT IF I NEED TO WALK PART OF THE COURSE?
Everyone, including the girls, should run at their own pace. Walkers should walk on the sidewalk or stay to the right to allow runners to pass on the left.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR THE RACE?
Plan your daughter’s clothing the night before the race. Depending on the weather, layers will help when it is chilly. A dry, warm layer of extra clothes may also be useful for after the race. Running shoes are preferred, particularly the shoes your daughter wore during the season. Wearing brand new shoes or socks the day of the race may cause painful blisters. Participants should eat something before the race, but nothing too heavy, and nothing an hour before the race. A plain bagel or toast is a good pre-race snack. We will have food at the finish line for race participants - you won't leave hungry!
WHICH SHIRT SHOULD MY DAUGHTER WEAR?
All GOTR participants should wear their PROGRAM shirt to the 5k. Girls on the Run (grades 3-5) girls should wear the GOLD shirt. Heart & Sole (grades 6-8) girls should wear the GREEN shirt.
WHAT DO I DO WITH THE RACE BIB?
Each runner should attach his/her race number (bib) to the FRONT of her shirt with the safety pins provided so that it is visible during the run. If your daughter is going to wear a jacket during the race, the number should be pinned to the front of the jacket.
Are there aid stations available?
There will be one water stop along the course. Additional water and snacks will be available at the finish line. An ambulance with EMTs will be on site in case of an emergency. There will also be a first aid station near the start/finish line.
WHAT TIME SHOULD I ARRIVE?
Arrive early! Plan on giving yourself and your daughter plenty of time for
parking, finding the team, using the bathroom, taking pictures, and visiting the Hair Station. Getting to the race location only minutes before the start time causes unnecessary stress and anxiety for you and your daughter. Many teams plan on meeting early to get group photos and to warm up together; you don’t want your daughter to miss this team experience.
WHERE AM I SUPPOSED TO PARK?
There will be over 2,500 participants on race day. Expect traffic and crowds and plan ahead. Parking will be available at several lots near the race site (see course map). In consideration of the businesses along Gateway Drive, please do not park anywhere other than these designated areas.
Please follow direction of the parking attendants. Parents should not drop off their child at the start, but rather escort them to their team and remain in the race area until their child finishes. Volunteer coaches are not responsible for your children on race day.
WHICH LOT IS THE CLOSEST TO THE RACE SITE?
The easiest place to park will be at 7021/7031 Columbia Gateway Dr. While this looks to be far away from our site, we have an easy walking path through the parking lot of 7000 Columbia Gateway right to our staging area.
Once this lot fills, your best bet is to park across the street from our site at the Renaissance Gateway building (where Earth Treks is located). There is an outer lot to the left as you enter the office park. Follow parking attendants' directions. Do NOT park in front of Earth Treks or anywhere close to the building entrances.
WILL THERE BE HANDICAPPED PARKING AVAILABLE?
Handicapped/accessible parking is available at the race site (please use north entrance to 7130/7150 Columbia Gateway) for those who have placards/tags only.
Can I bring my dog or pet?
For safety, all furry friends are not allowed on the course or at the event, so please leave all pets at home on 5k day! All pets will be asked to return to the pet owner's vehicle if spotted at the event.
WILL THERE BE BATHROOMS?
There will be porta-potties on site at 7130 Columbia Gateway Dr. for your personal convenience.
WHAT IS "CELEBRATION VILLAGE?"
Celebration Village is the place to be before and after the 5k! Before the race, girls can do their 'do at the Happy Hair Station, take photos in the “Photo Booth” Area and make cheer signs at the Sign-making Station. Bring some cash or a credit card, because we will also have a variety of GOTR Merchandise for sale. Stop by the Merchandise tent to find hats, gloves, scarves, jewelry, t-shirts, medals, and more!
After the race, stick around to visit our Sponsors' tables in Celebration Village. They'll have freebies, contests, items for sale and more! Sponsors on site will include Baltimore Orthodontic Group, BGE Home, Charm City Run, Corner Bakery, Elkridge Animal Hospital, Kind Bars, Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City, Loyola University Maryland, Salvere Health & Fitness, The Wendy Slaughter Team, Whole Foods—Columbia and more!
CAN I TAKE PHOTOS AT THE FINISH LINE?
Finishing photos are greatly encouraged; however, please understand that there may be lots of girls finishing close together. Stopping your daughter to pose for a photo at the finish line causes traffic jams and can be unsafe. Take a quick picture while your daughter is finishing and then take posed photos outside the finish area.
For the safety of the runners, we ask that all parents and spectators stay behind the netting or in designated viewing areas as they watch the runners cross the finish line.
I'VE NEVER RUN A 5k BEFORE. WILL I GET A MEDAL?
We are excited that your first 5k will be with Girls on the Run! However, finish line medals are for Girls on the Run and Heart & Sole program
participants only. All other runners can purchase a memento at our Merchandise tent to commemorate their achievement. We will have a limited quantity of 5k medals available for sale for only a few dollars each.
I STILL HAVE QUESTIONS. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
